The incident took place around 3:22 p.m. Wednesday, July 18 when the department was called to a residence on Sunset Drive in Croton-on-Hudson for a death investigation.

When officers arrived on the scene they were exposed to an "unknown" type of chemical agent that a person had used to commit suicide, said Croton-on-Hudson PD Lt. John Nikitopoulos.

After Croton police officers arrived on the scene, HazMat was called to clear the residence and the Department of Health was also notified.

Nikitopoulos said the officers were treated at the hospital and released late Wednesday. One relative of the man who committed suicide refused treatment.

He added that the department is waiting for autopsy results to identify the type of agent used in the death.

"We are still investigating at this point and don't have a lot of information to release," Nikitopoulos said.
